The story
Behind the products
That picture is related to kettlebell history because it shows Russian strongmen and athletes from the late 19th to early 20th century, a period when kettlebells were becoming formal training tools. The round weights on the floor are early kettlebells (called girya in Russian), which were commonly used by strongmen, circus performers, and military trainers. These athletes helped popularize kettlebell lifting as both a strength practice and a competitive sport in Russia. Images like this document the transition of kettlebells from farm tools into organized physical training equipment. As a result, the photo represents the cultural and historical roots of modern kettlebell training.
The Great Gama - undefeated wrestling champion of the world for 52 years, was known for his extensive use of the Gada to condition his upper back, shoulders and grip. Macebells, also known as Gada were first introduced as a regular training tool by the pehlwani (traditional wrestlers) on the Indian subcontinent about 100 years ago. They incorporated this unique tool in their training arsenal to great effect.
Clubbells trace their origins back thousands of years to ancient Persia and India, where they were used as strength and conditioning tools for warriors. In India, they became known as Indian clubs and were commonly used to build shoulder strength, coordination, and endurance. During the 18th and 19th centuries, Indian clubs spread to Europe through British colonial influence. They became popular in Victorian-era physical education programs and gymnasiums. Over time, their use declined with the rise of modern weightlifting equipment. In recent decades, clubbells have seen a revival as part of functional fitness and movement-based training.
